To the Coast, Young Man

Well, you won't be hearing from me for a bit - I'm taking a trip to the great Northwest for NITS - The NI Technical Symposiums. If you are in the area, feel free to come to the one in Portland (Dec 6th) or in Seattle (Dec 8th). I'm giving the talk on Designing a Large Scale Test Application with LabVIEW 8 as well as being part of the Experts Forum. I'm planning on giving a short presentation on .NET events and how they work in LabVIEW 8.

I'm actually heading up there a bit early to visit both friends and customers, so I'm running around a bit frantically right now trying to tie up loose ends. Ah, travel...

LabVIEW 7 and .NET 2.0

I'm happy to report that the final version of the 7.1.1f2 patch is now released and available for download. This patch allows LabVIEW 7.1 to work with .NET 2.0 and/or Visual Studio.NET 2005 installed on the same box (assuming you're using .NET and LabVIEW together).

LV and Exceptions

One of the problems with the .NET support in LabVIEW 7.x was that we didn't provide a lot of information on any .NET exception that occurred when you were running the code. I'm sure many of you got to know error number 1172 and wished you had studied numerology more seriously! Well, let's see what's new in LabVIEW 8 on this topic.

A New Chance

I realized I haven't updating my fellow dog lovers out there with the latest Chance news, so if you have an interest, read on...

PDC 2005 Presentations

The PDC 2005 presentations are now available online - not just the power point slides but the video of the presentation itself!

LabVIEW 8 Help Online

This just in - you can now access LabVIEW 8 help right online!

Office 12

One of the interesting things I saw at the Microsoft PDC was the new Office 12 demo. They've really shaken up the way the UI is presented. Based on how often Office sets the standard for applications, it's going to be interesting to see the reaction to the new paradigm.

I raise this now only because some new screenshots have arrived (thanks to the WinInfo site) and I thought you might find them interesting. You'll notice that in some ways it looks familiar - a standard File menu option. But the entire concept of a menu bar is actually gone...what you see across the top is not the menu bar, but instead a set of tabs. Notice that when you select the Page Layout tab, the set of icons change. This new collection of icons is called the ribbon, and it is all about being context aware.

As I said, some interesting ideas coming down the road. Now it's time to see how well they work.

For my sins...

Well, I guess because I just can't keep quiet about .NET it was bound to happen. Now that LabVIEW 8 is out the door, I've been promoted to the head of the .NET team here in LabVIEW...so I guess I can't blame anyone else anymore *grin*

I'm going to be a little extra busy for a while, but I hope to continue getting some posts out as before. However, please post a comment or send me an email if there is anything LV/.NET related you'd like to hear about.
